What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management.

Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance.

In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body’s natural painkillers.

Performed by a skilled practitioner, acupuncture can be a safe and effective treatment for a range of disorders. Acupuncture is used to assist in the treatment of pain or health conditions, that may include:

  • low back pain
  • neck pain
  • osteoarthritis
  • knee pain
  • headache and migraine
  • high and low blood pressure
  • chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
  • some gastric conditions, including peptic ulcer
  • painful periods
  • dysentery
  • allergic rhinitis
  • facial pain
  • morning sickness
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • sprains
  • tennis elbow
  • sciatica
  • dental pain
  • reducing the risk of stroke
  • inducing labor

What To Expect During Your Acupuncture Treatment

During the first acupuncture Gold Coast session, the acupuncturist will assess your general health. As each treatment is unique to the individual, this will facilitate the most effective treatment for each.

The investigative process will include questions relating to your current symptoms, past treatments, patient and family medical history, diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional health.

The pulse on both wrists will be taken to determine how energies are flowing in the body. As part of the diagnosis, the acupuncturist will assess the structure, colour and coating of your tongue.

During this comprehensive evaluation, the practitioner will observe your emotions, voice and self-presentation. This will further aid in the diagnosis and development of a treatment that will assist in harmonising your overall energy.

Specific acupuncture points will be chosen and the practitioner begins treatment. The length of the first session may vary to your needs. Subsequent treatments will last approximately one hour. Dietary and other recommendations will be discussed at appropriate times throughout the treatment process.

Confidential discussion of health history

In your first consultation, I would usually start by asking about your main complaint. I would then ask you a series of questions about other symptoms that you may or may not have. These would be symptoms that I think may be related in some way to your main complaint.

During this process, I would also ask you about any major illness that you’ve had throughout your life. This process, together with my observations about your complexion, general manner and appearance, would enable me to start forming my diagnosis.

    Mark Sargeant

Mark moved to Australia from England in 2012, and in 2013 began his formal training in Chinese Medicine at Endeavour College of Natural Health. Mark achieved a Bachelor in Health Sciences (BHSc) with distinction. During the course of his degree, Mark learnt from a variety of teachers and has spent time in different acupuncture clinics to further advance his understanding of Chinese Medicine. Mark has been assisting David at Coastal Natural Therapies since 2016, further developing his skills and knowledge.

Mark first became interested in acupuncture 25 years ago, after successfully being treated by an English acupuncturist. He subsequently developed a deep passion for Chinese Medicine, reading widely on the subject and having regular treatment with the intention to eventually train to be acupuncturist. Mark has always held a desire to help people and worked first as a disability support worker, then as a social worker for many years.

    Raisa Yap

Raisa first encountered East Asian Medicine while pursuing a Bachelor of Physical Therapy in Spain. This interest led her to earn a diploma in Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies (Japanese Remedial Massage) and to further her education with a Bachelor of Health Science in Acupuncture.

Starting a family while living far from her home country was a challenging period in her life. During her fertility journey, she noticed the overwhelming focus on the egg and the disproportionate emphasis on women’s roles in conception difficulties. This experience sparked her special interest in understanding, educating, and treating Male Reproductive Health. Additionally, she is passionate about supporting families and individuals dealing with “Expat Grief.”

Now a mother of two, Raisa enjoys assisting women through all stages of pregnancy, labor preparation, and postpartum.

She is also a foodie and often shares recipes and talks about her favourite dishes during a session.
