What is Dry Needling Acupuncture?

Dry needling is the insertion of sterile single use acupuncture or filiform needles directly into myofascial (muscular) trigger points. Trigger points are composed of multiple tight contraction knots within the muscle, which cause and contribute to pain within the body.

How does dry needling work?

The aim of dry needling is to release the pain in myofascial trigger points (called Ahshi points in Chinese Medicine) and to minimise or remove the referred pain that these trigger points cause. A trigger point feels just like a tight nodule within the muscle, commonly referred to as a knot, and often when pressed it sends pain to another area of the body.

Is Dry needling different from acupuncture?

The difference is that dry needling targets trigger points to treat muscle pain, while acupuncture treats a wide range of ailments, including pain. Both acupuncture and dry needling use the same type of needle and follow many of the similar points, but the theory and clinical reasoning behind the needle placement is different.

What are the uses of dry needling?

Dry needling targets;

  • Muscle pain/stiffness
  • Strains and injures
  • Aims to improve flexibility and range of motion
  • Aims to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Headaches and Migraines

And commonly treats symptoms associated with;

  • Sciatica
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Planta fasciitis
